Blackwater Fishing Info Website
Blackwater Lake is a great lake for both the serious and casual
fisherpersons! Whether you are after good eating walleyes, huge bass or
just want to let the kids reel in some sunnies Blackwater provides great opportunities. Bass, walleye, and crappie fishing in Blackwater Lake can be very good,
and there are definitely some wall mounters in these waters. The
Smallmouth Bass fishing is particularly excellent mid-summer.
There are northern pike, and pan fish to be caught as well.
Fishing Blackwater at night with a
full moon during the dog days of summer can be particularly exciting. At
this time of year Largemouth Bass love to hit surface lures at night,
and there is nothing more exciting than hearing a 5 pound bass explode
out of the water after your lure in the dark of night, and the best part
is that some of the best night time fishing is right off of our docks!

Woman Lake is a great walleye fishing lake and it is also known for its
muskies, and at Blackwater Cabins you are less than a mile away. Leech
Lake is the largest nearby body of water and is another great Musky fishery -
from Blackwater Cabins you are only half an hour from Leech Lake!
If you were ready to wet a line 10 minutes ago then be sure to stop by the following site to get your MN Fishing License online.

2007 Fishing Regulations
No matter what your skill level or "luck," a day on the lake is always better than a day at work!
Our lake cabins are also situated right down the road from all the bait, tackle, snacks, and fuel a fisherman or woman could need. The Mule Lake Store is full of wonderful products and knowledge of the local lakes.

Biking
Biking / Cycling is one of this region's most popular
activities. Your biggest challenge to enjoying biking / cycling in the area
will be having to stop! Here are two major biking
trails and one smaller trail for you to enjoy. This is just
a small sampling of the biking possibilities that the area has to offer.
- Paul Bunyan Trail from Brainerd to Bemidji. This well maintained trail will allow you to put on
some serious miles.
-
Heartland Trail was one of the first rail-to-trail projects in
the country. It is a 49 mile multiple use trail between Park Rapids
and Cass Lake. The trail is located entirely on a level abandoned
railroad grade except for a four mile segment north of Walker, on
sharply rolling terrain. The 27 mile segment between Park Rapids and
Walker has a paved surface. This segment also has a second grassy
treadway for horseback riding and mountain biking. The 22 mile
segment from Walker to Cass Lake is primarily compacted gravel and
railroad ballast with occasional sandy areas and can be used for
hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking
-
Itasca State Park also offers 16 miles of paved
bike trail in the most beautiful habitats Minnesota has to
offer.
- Mesabi Trail
Located in northern Minnesota between the cities of Ely and Grand
Rapids, the Mesabi TrailSM is a premier Minnesota bike
trail winding through some of the state's prettiest regions.

Hiking
Blackwater Cabins are located right between two great hiking trails and are within an
easy day trip of dozens of trails.
1. Deep Portage Conservation
Reserve
is a 6,307 acre reserve with an onsite environmental
education center, conference facilities, interpretive center and 20+ miles
of beautiful trails. We recommend the Bog Walk!
2. The Wood Tick
Trail a great section of trail for backpacking. There are many
primitive campsites on the shores of the small lakes along the
trail. Many of these lakes are stocked with trout and can provide
quite a wilderness fishing experience.
3. The North Country Trail goes from Central North Dakota to Upstate New York. This trail connects with a portion of the Wood Tick Trail and also offers many day hike options.
4. Many other trails in the area offer views of the
beauty and majesty of northern Minnesota's wild places. This link will
bring you to the Cass County page listing many of the trails in the
county.

Birding
Birding Trip Announcement!!! - Deep Portage is offering an MOU
Birding Weekend from June 8th - 10th! Stay at Blackwater Cabins
and you are only a few miles from the Deep Portage Entrance! If
you stay at our Minnesota Cabins for the week and are registered with the
Deep Portage Birding Tour we will give you Friday Night FREE! Here
is more info about the
Deep Portage Birding Weekend
From wood warblers to waterfowl, Blackwater Cabins
will provide plenty to seek and find for both the beginner and the
avid birder. My personal favorites are the warblers that can be
heard singing in the trees in May and June. Other birding highlights at the cabins
include a great grey owl perched above the driveway and the annual nesting of bald eagles in
a white pine near the cabins. Highlights during the summer of 2004
include: 30+ Scarlet Tanagers along the drive way in one day during spring migration, amazing common nighthawk migrations both spring and fall, nesting bald eagles, and a house wren nesting in an old paper wasp nest near the house.
This summer we also had a pair of Common Goldeneyes on the lake.
As an avid birder for many years I am VERY happy to take people to
the best spots in the area and even to find local "target" birds like
Yellow Rail or Nelson's Sharptailed Sparrow, just let me know you are an
avid birder before you come and I will be sure to have the latest info
on sightings in the area ready for you!

Blackwater Lake is perfect for our state bird. Every year, two or three pairs of loons
nest in the bays of Blackwater, lulling us to sleep
with their melodic voices and offering great looks at young loons still in
down. Another amazing spectacle occurs in August during
the run up to migration.
During this time I have seen gatherings of up to 15 Loons in the
same location on the lake! Truly amazing! Even non-birders
will appreciate the downy chicks riding on the adult loons back and
watching them learn to fend for themselves and grow. Our state
bird is truly a treasure to behold! |
|
Hummingbirds are among the most amazing birds on earth! We
have been feeding humming birds at the cabins for many years and
truly appreciate the hours of
entertainment they provide with their antics. Watch as they dive
bomb and chatter in vicious territorial displays, or just observe
their amazing delicacy, and spectacular color. |
 |
|
 |
We also annually host a great blue heron in the waters in front of our cabins - it can often
be seen enjoying the fishing off our swimming raft, while
ducks and mergansers occasionally visit our docks as well. |
